 Welcome!

This site is dedicated to information and use of Same-Language-Subtitling.  SLS is a video captioning  format intended to support reading acquisition and growth.

Same Language Subtitling is a term coined by Brij Kothari in his language acquisition study in India. For flash demo of his typical usage and an explanation visit:

My use of SLS refers to the use of Synchronized Captioning of Musical Lyrics (or other Audio/Video/Script sources) as a Repeated Reading activity. More Info

Same Language Subtitling:

The Use of Subtitled Music as a Reading Activity

in a High School Special Education Classroom

            by W. Greg McCall

SLS combines the popularity of Movie Music with Karaoke-like subtitling technologies to create repetitive reading activities. This same approach can also be used in our classrooms!

1) Example of a simple application -Cloze worksheet in combination with audio/PPT/or captioned video.

These activities are intended to be used in combination with the complete CD of the stage musical Les Miserables, or with the DVD Concert version of the stage musical.  Play the matching audio selection in conjunction with the following two PPTs. Better yet, print out the worksheet below, find the correct selection from the DVD and try the Music/PPT/and Cloze activity at the same time. Make sure to turn on the Captioning function (DVD option) Do not do stop and go with the audio--and you may need an assistant to help with the PPT

As a daily reading activity, my students will do 3-5 repetitions of song selection while completing the corresponding worksheet.

2) More advanced applications. Student generated products, software usage.

The process of creating presentation format is an intense repetitive reading activity reinforced with strong audio model --student work product can then be used as a class activity (Karaoke/cloze worksheet/proof checking etc --some form of engaged activity)

The following mpeg sample is from a student generated SLS used in my classroom. This sample is intended to present a small visual model as to possibilities of this tool. These presentations would then be used a a response worksheet similar to the above examples.

Musical sample 1

This is only a very limited sample of what can be done with the format --bear in mind that a transposed windows media file does not do justice to this presentation technique,

Please note that because of copyright restrictions I am only able to post limited samples of this format, further that transposing to a compacted file format has reduced the quality significantly. These samples should include both sound and video components.

Also try --

They have a simple downloadable program that will then play three very good samples -try their "La Bamba" Karaoke sample and play with the editing program --it is loads of fun!
